Please! No more pop stars in movies!

January 30, 2008

fergie.jpgHere we go, yet another popstar trying to be an actress. Wait a second, I take that back.  Stacy Ferguson, aka “Fergie” has been in the t.v. biz for quite some time. After reading this surprisingly long acting resume, the only impressive part of it is the fact that she was voice of Sally in several Charlie Brown specials, as well as the “The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show” (1983) TV series. I am not trying to be cruel, but not only is Fergie’s acting ability average at best, she is not very easy on the eye. Her body and hair is spectacular, and has tons of sex appeal, but her face always looks like she’s whincing in pain. I find it impossible to watch close ups of her face on the big screen. I’m not saying you have to be beautiful to be a great actress, I’m just saying if your playing a hot babe in a movie then you should actually be a hot babe.

Most of her acting resume includes these dreary works:

Planet Terror-Fun movie, but Fergie was a pointless casting choice
Grindhouse Poseidon-…. Performer/Rocket Power-… 1 episode/Outside Ozona/Goode Music/California Dreams-…. 1 episode/Tiffani’s Gold/Married with Children-…. 1 episode/Monster in the Closet/Kids Incorporated

I’m not too sure why Hollywood believes that we need to see Fergie. Her music is popular, but is it any good? Of course not! Well to be fair most of the tween pop out there is quite silly,  but it still doesn’t explain why we have to be forced to watch stars like Usher, Fergie, Alicia Keys, Beyonce,  , Justin Timberlake, almost all hip-hop A-listers, in many of today’s movies.  I know it makes good business sense but Jesus, this is getting out of hand.

Slow & Steady

queen_latifah.jpgThere are always exceptions to rules. Other musicians who’ve turned actors have taken the slow and steady approach to becoming worthy of being respected as actors. Rapper Queen Latifah broke out in the 80’s with unbelievable ryhmes and and millions in album sales. It wasn’t long before fans began to notice that Latifah could not only rap but also sing. It seemed  natural that soon enough she would  find a place in Hollywood as a leading actress. Taking small parts first, then more  challenging and unique roles that catered to her personality and presence. Whatever role Queen Latifah was given, she aced it almost everytime.Roles like:

Jungle Fever, House Party 2, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Juice, Set It Off, Hoodlum, Living Single, Sphere, Living Out Loud, The Bone Collector, Bringing Out the Dead, Brown Sugar, Chicago, Bringing Down the House, Scary Movie 3, Barbershop 2: Back in Business
The List goes  on and on and the roles, and payday only gets bigger.

Barbra Streisand, Will Smith, Reba McEntire, Mark Wahlberg, Meatloaf, David Bowie, Janet Jackson, L.L Cool J, Mos-Def and others have all taken the slow road  to movie stardom, well I wouldn’t exactly say Meatloaf’s a huge star for his acting, but he’s quite busy with his movie career. The point is, these artists  agreed to take whatever small role that was given to them and build their acting craft along the way.  I’m not saying there way no ego involved in  their effort to gain movie roles, but giving Vanilla Ice , Britney Spears, and 50 cent major leading roles in movies, and expecting them to carry an entire film is simply ludicrous. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention rapper Ludacris in my line up of pop stars who shouldn’t act. Oh wow, your playing a thug with no respect for women and other people’s life..big surprise. There was way to much back patting for his role in Crash. He did an okay job and people were actually talking about Oscar being a possibility for him. Your joking right?

I want actors! Just like I would prefer to see actual models on the covers of Vogue instead of actresses and pop stars like you used  see now. If Vogue presented themselves as a fashion magazine  featuring the most beautiful actresses and singers in the world, then I wouldn’t have any issue. People want to see models on the covers of magazines and movie buffs would rather watch a true, actual actor do A Raisin In The Sun instead of P. Diddy.
